石匠的故事The stonecutter
There was once a stonecutter, who was dissatisfied with himself and with his position in life.
从前有一个石匠，他对自己和自己在生活中扮演的角色都感到非常不满意。
One day, he passed a wealthy merchant’s house, and through the open gateway, saw many fine possessions and important visitors. "How powerful that merchant must be!" thought the stonecutter. He became very envious, and wished that he could be like the merchant. Then he would no longer have to live the life of a mere stonecutter.

To his great surprise, he suddenly became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries and power than he had ever dreamed of, envied and detested by those less wealthy than himself. But soon a high official passed by, carried in a sedan chair, accompanied by attendants,xiaogushi8 and escorted by soldiers beating gongs. Everyone, no matter how wealthy, had to bow low before the procession. "How powerful that official is!" he thought. "I wish that I could be a high official!"

An old man cut himself a bundle of faggots in wood and started to carry them home.

He had a long way to go, and was tired out before he had got much more than half-way.

Casting his burden on the ground, he called upon Death to come and release him from his life of toil. xiaogushi8 The words were scarcely out of his mouth when, much to his dismay, Death stood before him and professed his readiness to serve him. He was almost frightened out of his wits, but he had enough presence of mind to stammer out, “Good sir, if you you’d be so kind, pray help me up with my burden again.”

There was once an Ant that was very thirsty.

It ran here and there looking for some water but could not find any.

Then suddenly, when the Ant was almost ready to die of thirst, a large drop of water fell on it.
